Incumbents Young and Waters Clear Winners in At-Large Council Race. Ayers, Harris Also Win.

Incumbents Coleman A. Young II and Mary Waters glided to easy victories Tuesday night in the at-large Detroit City Council races.

The top four vote-getters in Tuesday's primary advance to the general election in November, where the top two candidates will win the at-large council seats.

As of  Wednesday morning with all 430 precincts reporting, former Council member Janee' Ayers came solidly in third, followed by James Harris, community relations chief of the Detroit Fire Department, in fourth.

With 145,724 votes counted, the results are:

  1. Mary Waters: 47,815
  2. Coleman A. Young II: 46,714
  3. Janee' Ayers: 20,038
  4. James Harris: 10,647
  5. Shakira Lynn Hawkins: 8,691
  6. Valerie Parker: 4,298
  7. Gary Hunter: 3,469
  8. Levan Adams: 3,386

The results show that Ayers and Harris have an uphill battle trying to unseat the incumbents, Young and Waters.
